This text narrates, autobiographically, the relationship between my life, experience and work as a sociologist and one of my main theoretical concerns: the concept of "community". In this exercise, I describe how this concept and I have been relating to different intellectual realities, mainly German Sozialtheorie, Anglo-Foucauldian theory and the Latin American sociological discussion. I also recover some more recent drifts, of epistemological order, that this work has assumed, and which are fundamentally related to the problem of the cultural embeddedness of sociological concepts. Finally, I articulate this whole journey with the cultivation of a "morality of discomfort," which for me is both an intellectual and a vital challenge.
