Gareth Williams is Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Michigan, USA. Of British origin, his work is dedicated to determining the theoretical and conceptual characteristics and contours of the historical transformation of Latin America, with an emphasis on the modern and contemporary era. His first book, The Other Side of the Popular. Neoliberalism and Subalternity in Latin America (2002), is one of the most systematic contributions to understanding recent transformations in the region, both at the level of the actual historical processes and at the level of the conceptual tools that defined and still define the field of Latin American studies.
