In the framework of a visit to Universidad Diego Portales in April 2016, we invited Daniel Chernilo (Loughborough University) to share and discuss in Social Theory Notebooks some of the most recent developments of his research program in "philosophical sociology. His book Debating Humanity: Towards a Philosophical Sociology, soon to be published by Cambridge University Press (2017), is an invitation to rethink the place that the question of what is human has in the history of sociology, on the one hand, and to reconstruct the anthropological properties on which a normative, non-essentialist defense of the human is possible, on the other.
