ranslating "Beschleunigung" into acceleration times: A theoretical exercise

Abstract

In 1936 Walter Benjamin, referring to the fortuitous case of finding a French translation of Nietzsche in Paris, noted: "But what puzzled me about those passages that were familiar to me, however, was not the deficiency of their translation, but something that might even have a certain merit: both the horizon and the world around the translated text had been replaced, had become French" (Benjamin 2019: 15).  This excerpt shows a fundamental issue of the exercise of translating: in this one attempts to represent (transfixing and locating) one world in another.
